Why would anyone jump from a perfectly good plane? Though it makes no logical sense, skydiving is one of the most enjoyable things you can do. Thanks to science, you'll have more fun than you ever thought possible!
Is Skydiving Scary?
We're going to level with you... the act of skydiving isn't scary at all. The part that's scary is walking to the door of the plane in preparation of jumping out. That 'walk' has your internal fight or flight mechanism on overdrive. As humans we are wired to remain on terra firma, so every fiber in our being is telling us not to jump and that's why it's scary. As for the actual free fall, it's one of the most enjoyable things you will ever do... like ever!
Why Is Everyone Smiling in Free Fall?
So, you're falling at over 190kmh and believe it or not, you're loving it! The reason for this ironic enjoyment is that you don't feel like you're falling. We can thank nature or physics or something for this, but the reality is once you hit terminal velocity at 193kmh, you are now riding on air molecules that feel as stable as laying on a bed. The result is that you feel more like floating than hurtling at the ground uncontrollably and it feels amazing. There will never be anything else you do that feels as free as this experience. For a minute you understand why skydivers keep jumping over and over again - the feelings of freedom in free fall is addicting!
If you hang around a DZ enough, you'll see that when people land they are over the moon giddy! The reason is science. With such a burst of adrenaline and feel good chemicals like dopamine and seratonin surging in your brain, you'll be on the most natural high you've ever been on. It feels amazing!
So now you know. Is skydiving scary? The walk to the door is, but the free fall is incredible. Just look at the photos and you'll know it's true!
